CUBISM
Its considered to be a revolutionary style of modern art, that started out as an idea. In visual terms is trying to show the concept of the fourth dimension, as well as trying to revitalise the western art style of the time, which was very traditionally based. It was the first style of abstract art in modern art.
Cubism started out in the early 20th century and combines the use of geometricity and multiple views to make extremely unique artworks. The idea behind a cubist painting is to play with the traditions of perspective drawing, in turn so the subject can be viewed from many angles at once.
Two major artists of this time, who are also believed to have kick started the cubist movement is Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) and Georges Braque (1882-1963) Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, painted in 1907, is considered to be one of the first Cubist painting, despite the fact that it was not popularly seen until 1916. But this could be argued, as Braque’s had a series of L’Estaque landscapes done in 1908, which were viewed years before picassos work.
Cubism influenced and encouraged alot of new styles that followed soon after, such as Futurism, Suprematism, and Expressionism
