Ross Bleckner

I had a look at Ross Bleckner, who I’ve never heard of before. He was born in NYC and raised in Hewlett, NY, which is a suburb in Long Island. Bleckner received his Bachelor of Arts from New York University in 1971 and his Master of Fine Arts from Cal Arts in 1973. He has taught at many of US’s most prestigious universities. Some of his works are held in esteemed public collections throughout the world, including MoMA, MoCA, Astrup Fearnley, Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, as well as the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Bleckner had a profound impact of shaping the NY art world, his philanthropic efforts have also enabled many community organisations to perform their vital work. He spent ten years as president of AIDS Community Research Initiative of America (ACRIA). Recently he has worked with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime in Northern Uganda to help rehabilitate and raise money for ex-child soldiers. The UN awarded Bleckner the title of Goodwill Ambassador in May 2009. Today he lives in NYC.

He is a postmodern artist, and much of his work is quite abstract. My favourite of these three works is Birdland, it has a very flowing composition, as do all of his works.
